THE PEN VERSUS THE SWORD


On Saturday, July 5, 1980, some notable intellectuals converged at the auditorium of the US International Communications Agency, Ibadan, to discuss a burning issue thrown in their laps by Nigerian Writers Club in commemoration of their second anniversary. Among the discussants where Peter Ajayi, then managing Director of Daily Sketch; Bode Sowande, ex-soldier-turned academician and Dr. Femi Osofisan, another academician.
Today’s post is a report of that symposium done in my capacity as the then Publicity Secretary of Nigerian Writers Club. No moment can be more auspicious to revisit the crucial issues raised at that symposium than now, especially with the recurrent traits of satanic leaders all over Africa.

President Ronald Reagan made some efforts at arms reduction during his tenure, but he made sure that a disproportional percentage of the nation’s budget went in for defence. That policy is reflected in today’s cartoon published in the Daily Times in 1981.
